Introduction to Music

Ages:  5 - 8

Tuition:  $60 per month

Time & Dates:

TBD

Objective:  Introduction of the Fundamental Music Elements of Rhythm & Pitch.

Benefits:  Gross Motor Physical Confidence; Neuroplasticity; Creative Self-Expression

Details:   An early-age introduction to Music course, rooted in the live-music experience.  Hand percussion instruments and Sing-Along songs demystify the process of making music.  Combined with gross motor supporting self-expressive dance in a positive environment, the children develop a healthy relationship with music as they discover Rhythm & Pitch.

Space is Limited:  Parents must stay on site and are encouraged to wait in the Lounge Area to minimize noise and distractions during class but you are always welcome to remain present if your child needs added support (like hands-on guidance or behavior correction).

Performances:  A Musical Show & Tell presentation will be done for parents/guardians on the last day of class.  Bring your supportive smiles and happy claps!

Supplies:  Hand percussion instruments will be provided for use in class.  On Show & Tell days, students will be invited to bring instruments from home (must be a manageable size that the child can safely carry on their own).

*Sensory Advisory:  Due to the naturally stimulating nature of the class, students with sensory needs are encouraged to take private lessons to allow them more control over the musical environment.

Performances:  Concert Band students will perform at the Christmas Concert & Spring Concerts.

Curriculum & Supplies:    A detailed list of required and recommended items will be sent upon enrollment, specific to the student's instrument and skill level.

Instruments:  I highly recommend purchasing or renting your instrument from Sacramento band and orchestra instruments store - Tim's Music

Amazon can be a decent resource for P-Bones, some percussion, and recorders as well as books and accessories.   Beware of super cheap instruments that are so fragile, they cannot be repaired in the future (as it was for my eb*y clarinet!)  The Musician's Friend has some recommendations and considerations.

If you are buying locally on Facebook Marketplace or from a Yardsale group, I suggest doing a public meet-up AT David's Broken Note in Woodland so that he can advise on its repair needs.

Beginning Band Class Pre- or Corequisites:

Beginning Band students shall have previously taken a Recorder class, passed a Theory proficiency exam, or be concurrently enrolled in private music lessons or the Recorder & Music Theory class.  Exceptions are at the director's discretion.

Please read before enrolling.

Music should be a joyful journey — not a battle. If your child isn't interested in the class, or loses interest partway through, it's okay to pause or step away. I'd rather they take a break than stay out of obligation and feel unhappy.

Engaged students create a better experience for everyone, and I’m here when they're ready to jump back in with enthusiasm.

Academic Freedom of Choice

Light in the Sky Music offers a unique opportunity for both homeschool and conventional school families to develop their child's performance art talents. While many classes are scheduled during school hours, I welcome students from all backgrounds when a class time works for the family.

Before You Buy...

Please be sure to consult with me, Mrs. Melissa, BEFORE you purchase a new or used instrument.  I may have an instrument available for loan or purchase, know of a great deal, or know of a SOUR deal!  Not to mention, certain classes have specific instrumentation requirements.   Shine bright and check in advance!

Scholarship Program

Do you want to support the performance arts education of a dedicated student?  Your financial contribution can make a difference!

Light in the Sky Music with Melissa is a private business, and with program growth there will come a time to have parents organize a Band Boosters 501c3.  Until that time, there are still needs to be met. Please get in touch with Mrs. Melissa to discuss how you can help.  Thank you, for your consideration!

Let Your Light Shine Through

My Philosophy

My teaching philosophy in the performing arts prioritizes fostering authenticity in children. I believe children learn valuable life skills by bravely expressing themselves, even when they feel vulnerable. To encourage this growth, I demonstrate the joy and freedom that vulnerability can bring by being authentic myself, whether it's through serious moments or silly ones.

Behavior & Discipline Policy:

Behavior & Discipline Policy

Core Values

Commitment to Growth

At Light in the Sky Music, we are building more than performance skills—we're developing character, responsibility, and community. Students are expected to arrive ready to focus, cooperate, and contribute to a safe and productive learning environment.

This is a high-expectation environment. While I offer plenty of support and encouragement, there is zero tolerance for behavior that consistently distracts, disrupts, or disrespects the class.

I believe in being proactive, not reactive. Parents will be notified promptly of behavioral concerns, and I ask for full support at home in upholding the program’s expectations.

Expectations

  1. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS the 1st time they are given.
  2. Show RESPECT for instructors, peers, instruments, guests, and the learning space.
  3. Stay engaged and PARTICIPATE fully during class time.
  4. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself unless directed otherwise.
  5. No sarcasm, side comments, blatant defiance, or disruption.
  6. No "Unsolicited Notes" to ensemble or classmates.

Discipline Process

I use a clear, structured approach to behavior management. Students are held accountable with increasing levels of intervention if needed.

Transgressions do not "reset" every day.:

  1. Verbal Reminder – A calm, clear warning.

  2. Visual Cue or Proximity – A non-verbal redirection or movement of seating.

  3. Temporary Removal – Student is briefly removed from the group activity to reset.

  4. Parent Contact – A 1:1 conversation exploring possible causes for the student's challenges and assessment:  Is this the right class for your child?

  5. Removal from Class – If the student requires parent contact twice, they are subject to possibly being removed from class.  There are no refunds when a student is removed from class due to behavioral disruptions or disciplinary actions.

Immediate Removal

The following behaviors will result in immediate removal from class that day, expulsion (without reimbursement) from the program will be under consideration, and a parent meeting will be required before the student may return:

  • Physical aggression

  • Verbal disrespect or inappropriate language

  • Intentional disruption of the learning environment

  • Destruction of property
